(Request a copy)From the beginning of the military conquest of the region, the majority of French observers mentioned that, before the advent of the French, the Algerian Muslims had strictly adhered to the Qur’anic prohibition against alcohol. This assumption was demonstrably untrue: The prohibition of alcohol in the Qur’an is clear, yet, historically, Muslims did not always translate the consumption of alcohol into a loss of religious identity.
