In addition to translating Pessoa’s work into Italian, writing several critical essays on him and making him a character in some of his stories, Tabucchi often resorts in his narratives to intertextuality with Pessoa’s texts, namely to a kind of intertextuality that I take the liberty to call “emotional”. Tabucchi was fascinated by the way Pessoa’s use of words seemed to express a very specific sentimental, historical and cultural reality, thus barely allowing their transposition into another culture or translation into another language. Nevertheless, he took up the challenge to familiarize himself with these “Portuguese” emotions and to appropriate the words in question, applying them to his own protagonists in the most faithful way possible to Pessoa. This article focusses, in particular, on his use of the saudade in the story “The Backhand Game” [Gioco del rovescio] and of the desassossego in the short novel Requiem (his only work written in Portuguese).
