Dialect variation in Bern – driven by public transport?

In the linguistic atlas of German-speaking Switzerland (SDS) we find data on the city of Bern collected in September 1944. At that time, mobility of the people in the greater city area did not affect the linguistic data in any way.
Since then, the linguistic variety spoken in Bern has been examined only poorly (e.g. Baumgartner 1940, Hodler 1969, Marti 1976, Siebenhaar 2000). Each of these studies documents one specific factor of the development of Bernese German (e.g. Hodler 1969 on Bernese German Syntax, Marti 1976 on Bernese German grammar or Siebenhaar 2000 on social varieties), mobility, however, has not been examined as a factor of change so far.
In my PhD project, I collect new data for Bern and its surroundings according to the variables surveyed in the SDS and compare them to the data of 1944. My main focus is on sound changes and reasons for these changes. Especially the influence of today's dense public transport system in and around Bern will be tested as variable to answer the question whether the urban dialect of Bern is spreading to its agglomeration or vice versa. As a basis for research serves the transport network of Bern Mobil as well as demographic information on migration movement in the city of Bern. A connection between public transport, migration movement and language variation is highly expected and a first presentation of results will be possible in late Summer 2015.
