Schneider, Christa (2020). Can you English? Das Steak auf des Berners Teller im Berner Mittelland. Germanistik in der Schweiz, 16, pp. 50-70. Schweizerische Akademische Gesellschaft für Germanistik
Full text not available from this repository. As Lingua Franca, as part of the youth language and as language of education, technology, me-dia, music, fashion and science, English influences the dialects in Switzerland. Anglicisms are therefore relatively frequent, some of them came into the dialects along time ago and are today completely integrated.
In this paper, I want to focus on the anglicism Steak and its usage in the greater area of Bern. In a study, 80 participants from 20 different localities were asked to order a certain menu in a restaurant. Results show that besides the Englisch pronounciation of Steak, also a Bernese German form exists. Furthermore, the results also show that the historical form Plätzli, which is today no longer a synonym for Steak, is still in use. To sum up, this paper highlights the process of a language change in progress on the on hand and on lexical stability on the other hand.
