Wisler, Michaela (16 September 2021). Human Remains as Religious Objects? A Point of View from Science of Religion. (Unpublished). In: Interdisciplinary Dialogues on Death Rituals: Materializing the Absent. University of Bern. 16. and 17. September 2021.
The consideration of materiality and human remains in Science of Religion is still very young and in development. Therefore, this presentation will trie to fill in a gap and will ask the question: can human remains be seen as religious objects? And how does Science of Religion engage with the topic of human remains as religious objects? The presentation will be divided into two parts; first there will be some theoretical thoughts about the idea of human remains as religious objects. Secondly, these considerations will be illustrated with some examples from European and Central Asian contemporary societies. These two examples from completely different regions and background should help to explain the potential of a viewpoint from Science of Religion about human remains.
