The loss of Acre triggered an intense reaction in texts across the Christian world.
One of these is the Middle High German Book of Acre, the only German vernacular
text to engage with a specific military event of the crusades. This paper examines
how the text uses the biblical discourse form of the city lament to frame the loss
of Acre for its German-speaking audience. The Book of Acre establishes three
subjects – the lamenter, God, and a third party – and, in alternating constellations
between those three, negotiates loss, grief, and soteriological disorientation. When
addressing the third party – whose identification varies – the first person narrator
looks back at the past event, at loss and destruction to assign blame and measure
responsibility. But when addressing God, the voice of the narrator finds different
strategies to maintain a discursive potentiality in which everything is not lost and
salvation can still be achieved, albeit by means of alternatives yet to be found
