There is strong empirical evidence for the fact that there are gender-specific careers and that career aspirations and the choice of a particular vocational education after compulsory education differ considerably between men and women. Gender-based segregation in occupational choice and in choice of the vocational or general education that will lead to this chosen career is often said to be due to gender-specific socialization and gender stereotypes which are conveyed within this process. This article describes and uncovers empirically relevant mechanisms of gender-specific career aspirations and career choices from a structural-individualistic perspective. For the analysis, data from the three waves of the DAB-Panel is being used, which contains information of 3300 students from 203 school classes in German-speaking Switzerland. With this panel data, it can be shown that the parents’ socioeconomic status and, associated therewith, the motive of intergenerational status maintenance as well as life course planning deliver important contributions to the explanation of gender-based segregation in occupational choice. These mechanisms associated with the social status of the parents are far more influential than gender-specific socialization.
