Clinical Validation of Ultrasound to CT Registration for Image-Guided Liver Surgery

We present in this paper the clinical validation of a robust and fast ultrasound (US) to computed tomography (CT) registration workflow for open liver surgery. A clinical trial (n=13) in which the surgeon autonomously performed the intraoperative image acquisition and registration workflow was carried out to investigate the accuracy and efficiency. The obtained accuracy was reported to be 6.2 ± 1.5 mm within the recorded 3D ultrasound volumes, thus indicating sufficient accuracy of the subsequent image guidance. Time requirements for the complete registration workflow were reported to be 120 ± 30 seconds, suggesting minimal disruptions to the existing surgical workflow.
