The theatre of Wajdi Mouawad associates the myths of origins with forms derived from the origins of western theatre. In The Blood of Promises, structured as a quartet, the incipit as well as the explicit resonate in relation to origins, using echoes to unite the quartet’s boundaries even while keeping them open. Origin is the principal source of agency in the work, positioned as epigraph within the very preface of Littoral (“On the Origin of Writing”); but it does its work through absence. Being absent, it constitutes the actual agent of destiny in the quest, but also its ultimate object.
