In this paper I shall develop an outline of a theory of educative instruction. First, I will clarify the concept of educative instruction. In particular, I will describe what is meant by the concept of Bildung in this theoretical framework. After that, I will refer to the debate on the possibilities and limitations of perfectionist and antiperfectionist arguments in political philosophy. Against this background, I will argue that it is necessary to develop an antiperfectionist argument for Bildung as the main purpose of educative instruction. As I will show, such a position is in tension with traditional perfectionist arguments to justify Bildung. Starting from a problematization of such traditional positions, I will develop an antiperfectionist argument for Bildung regarding the principle of respect that is essential for modern democratic societies.
