This paper addresses the application of computer technology as a means of achieving complex tempo structures in instrumental music. It discusses and historically contextualises possibilities of computer-aided composition and performance practice and proposes a formalism for the calculation of synchronisable tempo progressions as a distinct contribution to this field. Specifically, this paper is concerned with the aesthetic significance of the usage of such technological and mathematical means.
