In connection with a brief outline of the history of Church Slavic itself, the present article gives an overview of the different recensions of Church Slavic (the Middle Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian, Russian, Czech and Romanian recensions). Church Slavic (or “Church Slavonic” as it is also called) is a generic term for a group of Slavic varieties that have typically been used by Orthodox Slavs or Slavs belonging to Eastern Catholic Churches to produce texts with a (Christian) religious purpose. The term “recension” refers to a regional variety of Church Slavic, particularly in its medieval form. As becomes clear, however, the common notion of “recension” is problematic in a number of respects.
