Full text not available from this repository. (Request a copy)This paper investigates the roles of the organ as »king of instruments« on the one hand and as "instrument of king" on the other. It queries the origins of the instrument’s hegemony as well as the representation of its reign in organ building and in music theory. It becomes clear that the foundation of the organ’s royalty lies in its nature as a "wondrous machine" that combines the whole world of music in one instrument – a notion that can be traced from the late middle ages to modern times.
