Based on an exploratory case study, this paper aims to explore how clients in multi-sourcing software development settings promote a coopetitive balance between cooperation and competition as well as the consequences of service provider practice variations. Based on a first analysis of the data, we were able to identify high-level mechanisms and practices: First, we found three mechanisms that were used to establish coopetition on quality: modularization of software, tendering abilities instead of projects, and prescribing the service providers to cooperation as a mean to stay competitive. Second, we found three mechanisms that aimed to facilitate service providers in coping with the coopetition paradox: Introduction of a uniform development methodology, standardization of the design principles as well as the infrastructure, and the promotion of communication through co-location. Ultimately, we gathered first high-level examples about service providers’ practice variations to situationally cope with the coopetition paradox.
