Increasing costs of existing IT infrastructures, the need to replace outdated IT systems, and the quest to accelerate time-to-market for IT solutions, has led organizations to consider radically new ways to innovate their IT landscape. One such way is to develop systems based on standardized platforms and to incorporate partnering firms from the respective platform ecosystems in development projects. Mobile solutions adapted from the consumer world are a case in point. Firms drawing on such platforms, however, face the challenge to coordinate a diverse set of partners, such as: (1) Platform owners, providing the operating system and regulating the platform development; (2) complementors, offering readily deployable applications for the platform; (3) software contractors, developing functionalities according to the client’s requirements; (4) internal stakeholders, who develop applications and ensure component integration; and (5) hardware vendors, selling enterprise versions of consumer devices. This study seeks to explore how such complex settings are effectively coordinated by drawing on the concept of meta-organizational designs. Our ex ante analysis may reveal the possibility of ambiguity in the choice among meta-organizational designs which may be reflected by mixed coordination strategies. To explore this further, we plan to conduct an in-depth case study on a project from a logistics company that aims at equipping 30.000 distribution employees with a new mobile computing device including 18 tailor-made applications from six different providers. The expected results will contribute not only to the platform ecosystem’s and outsourcing literature, but also to the wider coordination literature in the context of meta-organizations.
