In the early 1970s, in a fundamentally changing market, Haas’sche Schriftgiesserei from Münchenstein (Basel) took over the French type foundry Deberny & Peignot. Buying the company, Haas not only acquired the rights to an array of typefaces, but also a fair share of potential clients – among them a few in the former French colonies in North and West Africa. While very little is known about Haas’ endeavors in Ivory Coast and Senegal, there is some information about its involvement in the Maghreb, especially in Morocco. Based on archival material and press releases, this presentation gave insight into the foundry's goals and motives in Africa, and contextualized them within a globalizing world of typography on one hand and within the Swiss society in general on the other.
