'Adam and Eve' was a vastly distributed engraving in Albrecht Dürer’s lifetime. Today, this piece of art is canonical and has been integrated into the most efficient information dissemination system of our time. This article aims to outline how far digital reproductions of artworks facilitate new, technology-based approaches in art historical research using the example of online accessible print collections. Against the background of media theoretical considerations shall be shown what the wants and needs with regard to digital collections are. It involves more than to apply the classical methods as usual by using digital surrogates while the manner how this is done remains dedicated to analog approaches. Digitization projects of museums, libraries and archives need transparency on the provided contents but also open systems to ensure a diversified and unrestricted use of collection’s objects and related metadata.
