The poet Osip Mandelstam was dogged all his life by a sense of exile and rootlessness whose causes were diverse (‘Judaic chaos’ of his childhood, nomadic upbringing, experience with historical catastrophes, and so on). His joining the Acmeist movement can be understood as an attempt to fight this feeling on the imaginary level. Indeed, the Acmeist programme, unlike the Symbolist movement, which depreciates the things from here below in favour of a transcendent reality, can be defined as an attempt to return to the world a certain materiality and hospitality. In this context, Mandelstam favours the architectural motif, which provides numerous images of shelter, dwelling and protection, especially in his collection of poems entitled Stone. However, if the architectural images evoked by Mandelstam temporarily appease his thirst for a home, they are not sufficient: the poet also invokes the power and special ontological status of the Russian language, the only language, according to him, able to rediscover the soul of things and to make the poet a sense of belonging.
