Testing the specificity of memory advantages in synaesthesia
The present study aims to distinguish between different theories for memory advantages in synaesthesia (i.e., general, domain-, and inducer-specific). Four groups of synaesthetes (grapheme-colour, sound-colour, grapheme-and-sound-colour, and sequence-space) and corresponding control groups performed memory tasks involving words, music, and pictorial stimuli. We hypothesized to find a memory advantage for the synaesthetes compared to the control group. More specifically, we expected to find a pattern of benefit tailored to the specific synaesthesias. However, preliminary results support this hypothesis only partially.
