Hanhart, Torben (2024). Lament of the Hen. Matthew 23:37–39. Luke 13:31–35. The Visual Commentary on Scripture
Full text not available from this repository. This online exhibition compares three visual sources in relation to the comparison Christ draws between himself and a mother hen in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. The artworks discussed are Frans Floris' so-called 'Allegory of Trinity' (or 'Jesus Christ, Son of God, assembling and protecting humanity through his Sacrifice on the Cross'; 1562, Musée du Louvre), a drawing attributed to Lucas Cranach the Younger (c. 1538, Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen, Berlin), and Peter Sellars' enactment of the St Matthew's Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach (2010, Berliner Philharmoniker). The individual discussions of these works are followed by a comparative comment in relation to the bible verses Matthew 23:37–39 and Luke 13:31–35.
